Get ready soldiers! The latest Call of Duty title has landed today deep behind enemy lines. From all the theatres of war across the historic period of WW2, Vanguard certainly looks very good, but how well does it perform? What kind of hardware is needed to play Call of Duty Vanguard at its best? We take a look at some PC performance benchmarks for Call of Duty Vanguard...

First of all, in this PC performance benchmark article for Call of Duty: Vanguard, we benchmark a range of graphics cards going from the higher-end RTX 3070, which is just under the recommended GPU for 4K Ultra graphics; to the mid-range GTX 1060, which is the recommended GPU for COD Vanguard; and finally down to the lower-end AMD Radeon R9 380, which is just slightly under the minimum required GPU for Vanguard.

Then we go through the FPS test results of each graphics card running at 1080p, 1440p and 4K screen resolutions. From there we can see the performance of the minimum and recommended system requirement graphics cards and consider how well optimized Call of Duty Vanguard really is.

Unfortunately, COD Vanguard does not have an in-game FPS benchmark tool, so we instead checked through most of the game's multiplayer maps to see which were the most demanding, then chose one and ran around an area, killing a few enemies along the way. We found this to be pretty representative of your overall gameplay experience in Call of Duty Vanguard, though performance will vary depending on the map. We also did not enable DLSS or FSR during these benchmarks.

With that in mind, let's jump into the PC performance benchmarks for Call of Duty: Vanguard...

Average FPS for AMD Radeon R9 380 in Call of Duty: Vanguard @ 1080p

Call of Duty: Vanguard Lowest Low Medium High Ultra
Average FPS 80.1 56 50.7 27.2 20.3
Min FPS 60.3 43.2 40.2 22.4 10.3
Max FPS 108.2 74 63.7 33.3 31.2
1% Low 57.2 42.6 39.1 17.8 8.1
0.1% Low 46 34.3 31.2 16 6.2

The R9 380's FPS performance in Call of Duty Vanguard at 1080p is actually surprisingly good up to Medium graphics settings. Afterwards however, the game uses all available VRAM and drops considerably to below 30fps performance on High settings. This means the R9 380 is perfect for playing COD Vanguard up to Medium graphics settings at 1080p resolution.

Average FPS for AMD Radeon R9 380 in Call of Duty: Vanguard @ 1440p

Call of Duty: Vanguard Lowest Low Medium High Ultra
Average FPS 79.7 32.5 17.8 10.6 739
Min FPS 56.3 26 15.2 8.7 5.2
Max FPS 116.9 45.3 21.1 12.7 9.8
1% Low 54.8 23.7 12.6 6.6 3.6
0.1% Low 53.9 11.8 10.3 6 3.5

The FPS performance of the R9 380 in Call of Duty Vanguard at 1440p is once again surprisingly okay up to Low settings, however this might be treading the line a bit too close, but is down to personal preference. Anything above Low settings however is completely unplayable as we would really struggle to hit enemies on time, let alone get any shots on them at all. So, the R9 380 is okay for playing COD Vanguard up to Low settings at 1440p resolution.

Looking over the results above, the R9 380 is perfectly suitable for playing COD Vanguard at 1080p up to Medium graphics settings, or on the Lowest or Low graphics settings at 1440p resolution. ANything higher is completely unplayable.

Conclusion

Overall, looking at the benchmark results above, Call of Duty: Vanguard actually performs quite well on a range of hardware, with a decent range of performance options and graphics settings to get the right balance of FPS performance and image quality on whatever hardware you are running.

However, to play COD Vanguard at its absolute best you will need a pretty decent GPU to play at 4K Ultra settings. Although an RTX 3080 is recommended, something lower like an RTX 3070 or even an RTX 3060 Ti might do fine at 4K with DLSS or FSR enabled as well.

For mid-range and lower-end hardware though, Call of Duty Vanguard performs quite well on Medium-High graphics settings depending on the resolution. With these cards you should be able to enable FSR as well to get an extra performance boost, but in the end they will be more than capable even without FSR enabled.

As a word of warning though, the Lowest graphics setting also reduces the render scale setting below 100%, which significantly increases performance but also dramatically reduces image quality. This is the reason for the Lowest setting get such high performance across all GPUs no matter the resolution, so make sure you tweak that option to your liking when using the Lowest settings

Additionally, COD Vanguard's performance changes a lot depending on the map, how many players are in the lobby, and other various factors. So expect performance to vary from the numbers listed above, but these should be considered in the lower bracket of performance whilst playing, in order to make sure you're not caught out on worse performance most of the time playing Vanguard.

As always, we welcome any and all feedback from you guys as well with your experience of hardware configurations and FPS performance/quality settings. That way we can all better gauge how well our systems will be able to run Call of Duty: Vanguard.

The "lowest" preset doing that res scaling is a bit daft, IMO, looking at the numbers.
