How well can the Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB run games
AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB
10 Aug 2021 - Graphics card reviewed

While some games have more powerful requirements than this GPU, the Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB is only really challenged by the most demanding games released today, but normally it is more than capable of running games with a stable frame rate at 1080p.

DirectX 12 gaming system requirements will be met by this gpu.

Here is a quick game performance synopsis for the AAA games played in 2021. In particular we focus on how well the Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB runs at Ultra graphics settings and what frames per second it is getting at 1080p, 1440p and 4K monitor resolutions. This card runs recommended graphics requirements of 740 games from the top 1000 most demanding games being played today.

First we looked at 1080p resolution for the Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB performance to explore what sort of benchmarks it would achieve on the popular title Resident Evil 8 and saw it deliver playable frames per second across the following graphics settings - Low: 71 FPS, Medium: 56 FPS, High: 38 FPS and Ultra: 27 FPS. We proceeded to look at Back 4 Blood to see how that compared and saw that it returned a reasonable 48 FPS at Ultra 1080p.

Next up we increase screen res tests to accommodate the growing in popularity 1440p screen size. So we booted up Resident Evil 8 to see how the Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB dealt with it. It scored up a weak series of FPS results across these graphics presets - Low: 54 FPS, Medium: 43 FPS, High: 29 FPS and Ultra: 21 FPS. Next we looked at Back 4 Blood which was playable with a 36 FPS at Ultra 1440p. And finally looked at Days Gone that got an Ultra 1440p FPS of 42. Running games at 1440p with a Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB is a suitable graphics card for this larger screen res. In some cases we might expect some graphics option tweaks down from Ultra to High to help improve FPS stability when gaming at 1440p.

How many years will the Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB graphics card play newly released games and how long until you should consider upgrading the Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB in your PC? Upgrade time for this GPU is currently placed at 2 years

Whats a good PC graphics upgrade for the Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB? A good upgrade choice for this graphics card today would be the 30 Series GeForce RTX 3050 Ti. For comparison of the 1000 most demanding games around today this suggested upgrade is 48% better and can meet 972 of their recommended requirements. Alternatively a suitable upgrade choice for the Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB is the R-500 Series Radeon RX Vega 64 8GB, which is 41% more powerful and can run 962 of the 1000 most demanding PC games beating their recommended requirements.

Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB Game Requirement Analysis

Overview
The Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB is an entry-level graphics card which is part of the AMD Radeon RX 5000 series. It was announced on October 7th, 2019 and released on December 12th, 2019.

Architecture
It is powered by the 7nm Navi GPU, which has 1408 shader processing units, 88 TMUs and 32 ROPs.

GPU
The central unit runs at 1717 MHz and goes up to 1845 MHz when the boost mode is triggered.

Memory
The RX 5500 XT comes with an 8GB frame buffer of GDDR6 through a 128-bit memory interface, while the memory clock operates at 1750MHz.

Power Consumption
With a rated board TDP of 130W, it requires at least a 450W PSU with one available 8-pin connector.

Performance
The Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB been built as a Low/Mid performance graphics card for 2019. Its direct competitor is the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. It will run most triple AAA titles released during 2020 on medium to high graphics at 1080p screen resolution. With adjustments and lowering anti aliasing this RX 5500 XT 8GB card can confidently maintain 60+ frames per seconds on high graphic settings at 1080p. Moving to 1440p screen resolution and the graphics card may need to be adjusted down to medium in order to maintain 50-60+ fps.

System Suggestions
The Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB is best suited for resolutions up to and including 1920x1080. We recommend a mid range R5 Ryzen processor and at least 8GB of system memory for optimal gaming performance from the RX 5500 XT 8GB.
